- The patient opens their jaw
- The patient then inserts as many of their own knuckles, from their non-dominant hand, into their mouth as possible
Alternative Methods
Insertion of as many knuckles as possible into an open mouth requires that the mandible be opened as wide as possible, which allows for the patient’s full, active range of mandibular depression to be assessed.
